Seattle PM Job Posting Trends - July Print E-mail

July 2010

July showed a lot of volatiity in the job postings.   Many jobs came and went during July, and also several that had been closed in June reappeared.    When the dust cleared, there was a net uptick in number of new jobs posted.

PM-Job-Trends-July-2010

The anticipated Microsoft surge as thier new fiscal year began did not emerge and they continued to run lower than historical average.   Amazon also continued to lag their historical highs, but were about normal for the last quarter.     As a result,  Amazon now leads the pack with 28% of total inventory of jobs versus Microsoft at 22%.     This compares to Microsoft at 27% versus Amazon at 14% back in March.     This is also driven from Amazon being very slow to fill positions.  It has the oldest listing on the site from last June and has the majority of job still open from last year.

What this also means is that since there was an increase in total postings this month, many other companies have gotten into the fray.   Just for fun, I created our exclusive Company Diversity Index that measures how concentrated the job postings are among posting companies.   The higher the number, the more diverse the company pool.    Note this also includes agencies and recruiters.    Here are the indexes for the past 5 months:

March April May June July
0.43 0.42 0.45 0.48 0.60
Product Arts Company Diversity Index

July showed a nearly 25% increase in our Index.   Here's wishing for more of the increasing job posting trend and company diversity.

Cheers,

Don

About our postings:

Product Management jobs include the titles Product Manager, Product Marketing Manager, and a few Segment or Category Managers.    Jobs could be full time hires or shorter term contract.

The New Jobs Posted line indicates the number of new postings in any given month.   Jobs Closed indicates the number of postings removed.   It’s hard to say that these were actually hires, as they could also have just been closed with no hiring.   The Month Ending Inventory is the total number of open postings on the site at the end of the month.
