Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides companies of all sizes with an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. With AWS you can requisition compute power, storage, and other services–gaining access to a suite of elastic IT infrastructure services as your business demands them. AWS is the leading platform for designing and developing applications for the cloud, has over 400,000 third party developers writing applications for the platform, and is currently used by leading companies like New York Times, Netflix and NASA/JPL. The Database Services team within AWS is responsible for setting the database strategy and delivering structured storage services to AWS customers. Our team delivers two services today called Amazon Relational Database Service (http://aws.amazon.com/rds/) and Amazon SimpleDB (http://aws.amazon.com/simpledb/). We believe that both our AWS and Database Services business are in their infancy. Over the next few years, together they will represent a very large business for Amazon.

 

We are looking for a Product Manager to help us build the Database Services business. In this role, you will be responsible for product strategy, new feature definition and roadmap prioritization, product/service positioning, customer segmentation and pricing, and demand generation. This position within the Database Services team represents a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor within a fast growing business and help shape the technology, product, and the business.

 

The ideal Product Manager for this role will be clearly passionate about the opportunity represented by cloud computing and next-generation database services. As one of the founding members of a lean product team, this individual must exhibit a well-rounded skill set, exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, and an entrepreneurial attitude and work ethic. She or he will be working closely with a senior engineering team and customers to understand product requirements and define key features. As a result, having a technical interest in the service and features we are delivering is important. This individual must also have strong analytical and marketing skills, using various channels to drive awareness, trial, adoption, and repeat usage.

 

 

Key Product Management objectives include:

 

  • Drive broad adoption and provide an unparalleled customer experience. Develop the strategy and tactics that we will use to drive awareness, trial, adoption, and repeat usage of cloud database services. Among the mechanisms you should evaluate and be comfortable with include new feature definition, various marketing channels (e.g. Public Relations, Developer Evangelism, Promotions, Internet Marketing, etc.), pricing changes, customer surveys and profiling, and sales and partner support.
  • Lead the organization through service or feature launches, evolution, and sustained growth. The ideal Product Manager must be as passionate about operational performance and predictability as all other aspects of the customer experience. She or he must exhibit excellent judgment on how to prioritize between focusing on existing versus new customers and between features, architectural improvements, and operational excellence.

  • Complete analysis needed to drive a new Database Services business initiatives, including financial models, detailed customer segmentation, competitive analysis, ecosystem analysis, pricing analysis, etc.
  • Complete marketing plan for new business initiatives, including branding, marketing and PR plan, and communications strategy.
  • Deliver key product management analysis and materials, including market and customer requirements, use case definitions, feature roadmaps, customer surveys, and well-written customer experience materials (website pages, FAQs, etc.).
  • Project manage the public launch of new service features, from feature definition through demand generation.
  • Compile, manage, and report on daily and weekly business metrics. In this role, you will be called upon to highlight key business trends to senior leadership on a regular basis.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • MBA and 2+ years of work experience, including internship or academic experience
  • If no MBA, 5+ years of work experience, at least 2 of which must be in product management

 

 



Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven track record of driving business strategy and results for technical products or services
  • Conversant in internet technologies with the ability to rapidly develop a deep understanding of a new market, technology, or ecosystem
  • Superior analytical skills and the ability to drive business decisions using data
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to influence others internally and externally
  • High attention to detail, comfortable with “hands-on” management of tasks, and proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously
  • 3+ years of product management experience
  • Database and SQL experience a plus
